Wondering whether a career in PR is right for you? We’ve put together some reasons why we think it’s one of the best industries to work in, whether you’re fresh out of education or looking for a change of career.
You can be creative
A role in PR gives you the perfect opportunity to be creative on a daily basis. You’ll regularly need to come up with fun, exciting and interesting ideas for campaigns, to grab public attention and get your product, service or cause noticed. Having to think outside the box and create fresh proposals frequently will ensure no day is dull and you’ll always have something appealing to work on.
You can work in a variety of different industries
Whether you end up working in-house or for an agency, PR can give you the opportunity to experience a range of different industries. Whether you have a passion for cars or charity causes spark your imagination, they’ll be companies in that sector that need your help. You can also choose what type of PR you want to be involved in, from corporate and B2B to consumer, financial or crisis management. The choices are endless, so there will always be the chance to explore something new and work in a sector and job role that interests you.
Your days will always be different
One thing’s for sure, when you work in PR, no two days will ever be the same. They say variety is the spice of life and you’ll certainly get to enjoy that in this industry. One day you could be writing a press release or organising a promotional event, the next you may be attending an awards ceremony or overseeing interviews. It’s also a fast-paced environment and you will need to be adaptable to respond to changes in your schedule at the last minute, whilst being able to multitask and work under pressure. With all this going on, it’s unlikely you’ll ever be bored, which gets a big thumbs up from us.
You’ll never stop learning
As well as being fast paced, PR is also a dynamic industry and it’s important that professionals working in it, keep well informed and stay ahead of the game. From new technology and emerging social media platforms, to novel trends such as influencer marketing, there will always be something fascinating to learn, to help your client’s going forward. Keeping your skills current will also be of benefit to you in the long run, with your current role and your future career.
Your Work Matters
PR is important for any business, whether it’s a start-up needing support to grow or a high-profile company trying to defend its reputation. The work you do can make a difference to a firm’s bottom line and is becoming more valued than ever. PR isn’t just for big corporates either. You could work promoting worthwhile causes and getting the word out about things that improve people’s lives and communities. Let’s face it; it’s always a great feeling to know that your work matters and a job in PR can certainly allow you to experience that.
